Casualties reported at Georgia high school following apparent shooting

A shooting at a high school in north-central Georgia led to the building being temporarily placed on lockdown while authorities responded to the scene.

Police confirmed multiple deaths and injuries Wednesday at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.

“At approximately 10:23 a.m., officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and fire and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the high school on a report of a shooting,” the Barrow County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Video from the scene showed emergency responders trying to help people outside the school and dozens of police officers surrounding it, and the FBI confirmed it was monitoring the situation as it unfolded.

“I am directing all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and ask all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of students in classrooms in Barrow County and across the state,” said Gov. Brian Kemp.
