Cat from Virginia mistakenly discarded with an old sofa

This cat really has had quite an adventure.

A family in Virginia has been joyfully reunited with their cat after a series of unfortunate events that began when the cat was inadvertently discarded along with an old couch. Somehow, this brave little feline managed to survive a trip to the dump, get rescued from a trash pit, and then find a way to escape again.

“It’s just a happy ending, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped us,” owner Neal Augustein expressed. “There were so many moments when it could have gone horribly wrong. We’re just really happy to have him back home.”

Augustein, who works as a radio reporter, said the troubles began when Mike, their six-year-old domestic shorthair, stopped appearing for mealtime.

“He went missing on a Sunday, and it wasn’t long before my wife and I realized he was gone,” Augustein recalled.

By the very next day, the family was frantically searching the surrounding neighborhood for their lost pet.

“I was out in the neighborhood, shaking a bag of treats, calling out, ‘Mike. Mike. Mike.’ I even stood near the storm drains while wandering around,” he said. “It felt like a mystery, and honestly, that was the toughest part—not knowing where he could have been.”

But then Augenstein had a sinking feeling: “I had just gotten rid of three couches. I couldn’t shake the thought that he might have been in one of them.”

When Augustein looked for the discarded furniture, he found out that the junk crew had already taken everything to the landfill.

This unfortunate situation landed Mike at the Fairfax County I-66 Transfer Station, a place where huge amounts of trash are compressed and manipulated by heavy machinery.

But it seems our brave little cat had a bit of luck left.

A heavy equipment operator named Mauricio Martinez noticed Mike, who was visibly scared and trapped on a ledge about 15 feet above a pile of asphalt.

“He was frightened and stuck,” Mauricio said, prompting him to alert a supervisor.

“Sure enough, there was a cat on the ledge of the pit,” Joshua Murphy, the assistant superintendent at the landfill, confirmed.

With potentially dangerous machinery surrounding them, the landfill workers quickly jumped into action, maneuvering a loader bucket to where Mike was and spending roughly 10 minutes persuading the frightened cat to hop in.

Finally, they thought Mike was safe—until he made another break for it.

This slippery kitty dashed away from his rescuers, fled through a tunnel, and disappeared into a storage area, setting off another frantic search.

Animal control eventually managed to catch the runaway cat and brought him to a nearby shelter.

They reached out to Augustein, who rushed to the shelter only to find out Mike was at another location. After an emotional reunion, they finally returned home, bringing Mike back to his relieved family.

“I’m thrilled to have him back,” Augustein shared. “He’s already back to sitting on my keyboard. At first, his sister, Mochi, was hissing at him because he still smelled like the dump, but things are returning to normal now.”
