A Havanese puppy in Edmond, North Dakota, lost his life thanks to his cat scaring off two coyotes during a Dec. 1 attack.
The dramatic rescue was captured on the family's outdoor surveillance camera.
Homeowner Lane Dyer shared the footage and the remarkable story with Fox News Digital.
Dyer said he had just told his family the night of the incident. small dog, Oakley was outside running errands while taking care of two other dogs in the house. The dog only went outside for a moment when the family heard the commotion.

“Oakley ran around inside the house and ran upstairs,” Dyer said in a phone interview with Fox News Digital.
“She had been cut in the chest and side and was bleeding profusely.” (See video of the incident at the top of this article.)
Dyer's wife wrapped Oakley, put pressure on his wound, and rushed him to the hospital. emergency veterinarian.
“I had no idea what was going on,” he said.
On the drive to the vet, they pull up the security camera footage and are shocked to see the attack and the bravery of their cat Binx.

“She knew exactly what was going on and acted without hesitation,” Dyer said.
“And when she got on the ground, she hissed and jumped at the coyote.”
He added: “Never in a million years would I have imagined that a cat would do something like that.”

Binx is a stray cat who started visiting the Dyers' garden when he was just a few weeks old.
She stayed there as the family started feeding her.
“We've tried to bring her inside, but she's not interested in being an indoor cat,” Dyer said.
“she I like the elements, and I think she's been in a lot of situations where she's had to protect herself. She lives in our backyard. ”

The family said this is the first time a coyote has attacked a neighbor's pet.
“You can sometimes hear them howling in the evening, but I've never heard them that close,” Dyer said.
“Never in a million years could I have imagined that a cat would do something like that.”
After undergoing treatment and receiving stitches, Oakley has made a full recovery and is recovering well.

Based on this experience, Dyer advises other pet owners to “not take coyotes for granted” and to view coyotes as potential predators.
“They have the ability to hunt and prey on small targets and attack without warning,” he warned.
