Introduction: Cathay Pacific cancels flights due to RR engine issues
Good morning and welcome to our continuing coverage of business, financial markets and the global economy.
Rolls Royce engine trouble causes Hong Kong airline to Cathay Pacific Pacific 24 round-trip flights will be canceled.
of 8 Cathay Pacific The airline, which is rushing to inspect its Airbus A350s equipped with Rolls-Royce engines, today cancelled nine flights from Hong Kong to Singapore as well as other flights across Asia.
last night, Cathay Pacific “Several aircraft will be grounded for a few days while inspections are carried out as a precautionary measure,” he said.
Only Cathay Pacific The flight departing from Hong Kong to Singapore at 15:15 local time today will use a Boeing 777-300 jet.
Three flights to Bangkok, three to Tokyo and one to Taipei were also canceled.
Cathay Pacific responded after one of its A350-1000 wide-body planes experienced a component failure shortly after taking off from Hong Kong to Zurich on Monday. The plane dumped fuel overboard before returning safely to Hong Kong, where the engine component failure was confirmed.
Keith Brown, Cathay Pacific Pacific The engineering director said yesterday:
“Each aircraft undergoes rigorous inspections. Once the inspections are complete, aircraft that have been cleared to operate will be put back into service, while those that have technical issues will undergo further repair and maintenance work.”
“Meanwhile, we are coordinating with the Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong, as well as the aircraft and engine manufacturers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank our customers for their understanding and cooperation.”
The A350-1000 is powered by Rolls-Royce's XWB-97 engines.
The problem is believed to be caused by a deformed or deteriorated fuel line, Bloomberg reported.
Deformed or deteriorated fuel lines are believed to be the reason Cathay Pacific Airways has grounded several Airbus SE A350 flights as it carries out preventive inspections of the entire fleet, according to two people familiar with the matter. https://t.co/XpS1ShkNy9

Rolls-Royce shares fell 6.5 percent on Monday after reports of Cathay's problems broke.

Rolls-Royce has confirmed that the Cathay Pacific plane which encountered trouble yesterday was equipped with one of its Trent XWB-97 engines.
It says:
Rolls-Royce also noted that the relevant authorities in Hong Kong have launched an investigation under ICAO Annex 13, which prevents Rolls-Royce from commenting on investigations.
Rolls added that it was “committed to working closely with” airlines, aircraft manufacturers and relevant authorities to support their efforts.
Rolls also noted that if a part needs replacing, spares are available and the change can be completed “with the engine in flight.”
Other airlines that use A350-1000 jets are awaiting further information on the issue.
Reuters reports:
Tokyo-based Japan Airlines (JAL), which has five A350-1000s in its fleet, all of which are less than a year old, said it had asked Rolls-Royce for more information but that the A350s had not been grounded in the meantime.
“If the engine manufacturer takes further measures, we will respond accordingly,” a JAL spokesman said.
