Concerns Over School Security in Minnesota
A letter recently resurfaced addressed to Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz, highlighting significant security concerns for Catholic and other private schools. Jason Adkins, the executive director of the Minnesota Catholic Conference, along with Tim Benz, president of an advocacy group for private schools, expressed that these institutions are facing “urgent and critical needs” for enhanced safety measures. This communication was sent on April 14, 2023, but remains relevant given the tragic events that have occurred since.
Two years ago, prior warnings from Catholic leaders were overlooked, culminating in a devastating incident at a Minneapolis Catholic School that resulted in two fatalities and injuries to 17 others during a Mass attended by students.
The letter remarked on the recent mass shooting at Covenant Christian School in Nashville, which happened just a week prior, emphasizing that “the school is under attack.” This serves as a sobering reminder and raises alarms about safety in educational environments.
In the communication, the leaders specifically referenced the increasing threats faced by private institutions, particularly those serving Jewish and Muslim communities. They stressed that the recent tragedy at Covenant Schools should not be repeated anywhere, asserting a collective responsibility to safeguard all students.
Notably, around 72,000 students in Minnesota’s independent Catholic, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim schools are currently excluded from a $50 million state grant program aimed at improving building security and cyber protections. Concerns were raised about their exclusion from the state’s safe school initiative, which encompasses emergency response training, upgrades in security, and mental health resources.
The letter further asserted, “In Minnesota, attacks on any school—public, private, charter—cannot be accepted.” There is a strong call for ensuring adequate resources to prevent future attacks, reflecting the broader community’s anxiety surrounding safety.
The spokesperson for Governor Waltz responded, emphasizing that he is deeply committed to student safety, highlighting the significant legislation passed to bolster funds for school security. While some claims regarding funding were disputed, the governor’s office maintains that private institutions also receive state support for safety initiatives.
The recent mass shooting, attributed to a 23-year-old shooter later identified as Robin Westman, has intensified discussions surrounding school safety and gun violence. Westman opened fire in a manner described as chaotic, leading to the tragic loss of young lives and sparking conversations about domestic terrorism, as outlined by FBI officials.
The victims in this horrific event were just 8 and 10 years old, emphasizing the urgency of reforming school safety protocols. Investigations into the shooter’s actions and motivations are ongoing, revealing alarming anti-religious sentiments that further complicate this issue.
As Minnesota considers the Shield Bill, aimed at enhancing school security funding, there is concern regarding the potential exclusion of private schools from receiving additional resources.
