The US Customs and Border Patrol closed its immigration processing facility near San Diego, California, following a “unprecedented decline in anxiety.”
According to CBP, the temporary facility at Otay Mesa, which opened in January 2023, had the primary purpose of “to process individuals safely and promptly in US Border Patrol custody,” and had the capacity of about 500 people.
“Because of the unprecedented decline in the uncertainty of illegal aliens as a result of the President's recent enforcement actions, CBP is reducing the number of temporary softside processing facilities where illegal aliens have been held at certain locations along the southwest border,” CBP's deputy commissioner of public affairs, Hilton Beckham said Thursday.
“CBP recently closed its softside processing facilities in Texas and Arizona, and CBP now closed yet another softside processing facility in San Diego,” he added. “The US Border Patrol has full capacity to manage the detention of aliens arrested in a permanent USBP facility.

“Humans and other resources dedicated to temporary processing facilities will be directed towards other priorities and speed up the progress of CBPs to gain operational control on the Southwest border,” Beckham said.
As the overall encounter continues to plummet at the Trump clock, the new border sector will become the country's busiest

At the time of opening, the Otay Mesa facility was “weatherproof” and “climate control” and “hopefully providing ample area for food, sleep and personal hygiene.”
“The temporary 130,786 square feet facility will provide additional processing power for Border Patrol's San Diego sector,” he added.
