The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about a rapidly spreading fungal infection called Candida auris that has a 60% fatality rate.
The first case of Candida auris infection was confirmed in Washington last month, and the infection has spread rapidly, mainly in medical facilities. The CDC warned that one in three patients infected with this fungus may die. Seattle and King County reported their first confirmed cases of the fungal infection last week. Seattle’s First Hill Kindred Hospital said that asymptomatic patients are “appropriately isolated from the rest of the patient population with additional clinical and cleaning precautions in place to prevent the spread of infection.”around express:
This deadly fungus usually affects people with weakened immune systems, but is resistant to some common antifungal drugs.
It first appeared only 15 years ago, but in that time Candida auris infection rates have skyrocketed. In 2021, there were 2,377 confirmed clinical cases in the United States, a staggering increase of more than 1,200 percent from 2017. The CDC warned that Candida auris can cause infections throughout the body, including the bloodstream, open wounds, and ears.
In the case of Candida auris, symptoms can look like a common bacterial infection. However, infected people can unknowingly spread the fungus. “Colonized individuals can transmit C. auris to surfaces and objects they come into contact with, which can then infect other patients,” the CDC said.
The CDC also warned that Candida auris can be mistaken for another type of fungus “unless specialized testing techniques are used.” Misidentification of fungi can result in patients receiving the wrong treatment.
News of the outbreak comes shortly after the CDC issued a warning about Listeria monocytogenes outbreaks in U.S. dairy products.
The outbreak has already killed two people and is primarily spread by contaminated cheese, crema, and yogurt made by Rizzo-Lopez Foods, which is voluntarily recalling these products. This product is sold at many supermarket chains including Whole Foods and Food City.According to the Daily Mail, 26 Americans fell An additional 23 people were hospitalized in 11 states due to the bacterial infection. Two deaths were reported in Texas and California.
