Efforts for a Ceasefire in Gaza Continue
Special envoy Steve Witkov is set to meet with officials from Israel and Qatar in Rome on Thursday, aiming to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. This comes amid a backdrop of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, which have escalated over nearly two years. Witkov’s travel plans will be contingent upon the progress made during discussions in Rome. If there’s enough advancement, he may proceed to Doha to finalize the agreement.
Reports suggest a meeting in Rome indicates that a deal could be close. Earlier this month, Israel expressed support for a 60-day ceasefire proposal endorsed by the United States. This agreement outlines the stepwise release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli troops from certain areas in Gaza, and ultimately, an end to hostilities.
In response to the ongoing conflict, it has been noted that both Israel and Hamas have criticized the UN for its handling of the situation. President Donald Trump remarked positively on July 1 regarding the ongoing efforts to establish conditions for a ceasefire, mentioning that there had been extensive discussions with Israeli representatives.
Trump has also shown optimism about the prospects of a resolution. While signing legislation related to fentanyl on July 16, he acknowledged Witkov’s efforts, expressing gratitude for the progress made regarding Gaza, although he refrained from going into specifics.
If a ceasefire is achieved, it could pave the way for the expansion of the Abraham Accord, which was a significant achievement during Trump’s administration, aimed at fostering normalization agreements with several countries in the region. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar indicated on June 30 that Israel is committed to ending the conflict, underscoring an interest in peace and normalization with neighboring countries such as Syria and Lebanon.
