Hollywood figures who have openly supported a “free Palestine” are facing scrutiny for their muted or critical reactions to a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered by former President Donald Trump.
This ceasefire deal, announced on October 8, comes nearly two years after a violent Hamas attack led to widespread conflict in Gaza. The initial phase of the agreement includes Hamas releasing the remaining 20 hostages in exchange for Israel freeing around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 250 with terrorist convictions.
In a speech to the Knesset, Trump praised the ceasefire as a “historic day,” but many in Hollywood, who previously advocated for peace (such as those associated with initiatives like Artists 4 Ceasefire), have either stayed silent or issued criticisms, overlooking Trump’s involvement. Some notable figures have seemingly failed to engage with the news positively.
Michael Rapaport, an actor and comedian known for his pro-Israel stance, pointed out the absence of reactions from prominent supporters of the Palestinian cause, labeling it as “performative.” He called out actors like Mark Ruffalo and John Cusack for their quietness regarding the ceasefire, alleging that their activism may not be sincere.
Columnist Paula Froehlich echoed these sentiments, suggesting that many in Hollywood seem more interested in their public stances than in the actual situation for Palestinians, questioning their commitment to true change.
Some voices within the Free Palestine movement argue that while the ceasefire is a step forward, it fails to fully address the ongoing humanitarian crisis and allegations of genocide against Israel.
Responses to the deal have varied. John Cusack referred to it dismissively as merely a media opportunity for Trump, arguing that Netanyahu would quickly revert to military actions. Javier Bardem expressed his view that the ceasefire, while a positive development, still leaves many issues unaddressed for Palestinians. Others, like Mark Ruffalo and Susan Sarandon, released statements showing cautious optimism, emphasizing the potential for saving lives and improving conditions for civilians.
The peace agreement has also been met with skepticism from some celebrities, with statements warning that genuine humanitarian relief for Palestinians still hangs in the balance. A statement from the Artists4Ceasefire group highlighted their ongoing commitment to support Palestinian rights and called for the boycott of Israeli film institutions until conditions improve.
On a different note, some actors, including Natalie Portman, welcomed the peace deal, urging celebration over conflict resolution. Regardless of their positions, the interactions illustrate the complex dynamics of activism and politics within the entertainment industry amid ongoing global issues.
