Celebrities in Hollywood keeping quiet about political matters

As political discussions become more prevalent in media and entertainment, several celebrities are opting to steer clear of political commentary, particularly amid America’s ongoing cultural conflicts.

Stars like Kevin James, Neil Patrick Harris, and Michelle Yeoh have notably chosen not to engage in political dialogue or have actively worked to sidestep the issue.

In a recent interview, James articulated his reasons for avoiding political discussions. He mentioned, “There are experts out there who understand politics far better than I do. I prefer to focus on what I can do, like providing an enjoyable escape from the chaos of the world.”

He continued, “Everyone experiences stress daily, which is, I suppose, necessary. But we also need breaks. You’ve got to look for the good around you; otherwise, doing your job becomes impossible. I want to spread joy and offer a nice distraction from everyday life.”

Variety has pointed out that James is known for his apolitical stance, focusing primarily on making people laugh.

Similarly, Neil Patrick Harris, recognized for his comedic roles, recently refrained from commenting when faced with political questions during a press conference for his new film, “Sunny Dancer.” When asked about the potential for films to tackle political issues, he reflected, “We exist in a divided world with peculiar algorithms right now, so I’m more inclined to pursue art that stays away from politics. Humans seek connection, after all.”

Harris elaborated, saying that when movies resonate with audiences on a human level, they can inspire and create a sense of excitement without needing to filter it through a political lens.

During the press conference, a journalist suggested they felt embarrassed claiming the film wasn’t political, especially regarding healthcare issues reflected in the narrative. In response, Harris acknowledged, “While I have my own political beliefs, especially in a film like this, I aim to be inclusive. I never viewed this project as a political statement; it’s more about personal growth and friendship.”

Michelle Yeoh, co-star of “Crazy Rich Asians,” likewise sidestepped political questions during a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, stating, “I don’t feel equipped to discuss the political climate in America, and I can’t claim to fully understand it, so I’d rather focus on what truly matters to us: the films.”

She added, “People often say movies won’t survive due to everything happening around us and shrinking attention spans. However, I don’t subscribe to that idea. When you enter a movie theater, you choose to disconnect and enjoy what’s in front of you. It’s a time to open your heart. Movies are where we gather to experience joy and sorrow together, and it’s vital to keep that tradition alive.”

While some like James, Harris, and Yeoh are opting out of political discourse, others, such as Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, actively engage in political matters. Finneas recently defended Eilish on Instagram after she faced backlash for expressing strong views while accepting an award at the Grammy Awards, emphasizing the intensity of reactions from certain critics.
