Hollywood Stars Seek Refuge in France
In recent years, many prominent figures from Hollywood have been relocating their families to France, leaving their home turf behind.
Notable names like George and Amal Clooney, Angelina Jolie, and Natalie Portman have all opted to raise their children abroad. This shift appears to stem from various factors, including the relentless paparazzi, a desire for privacy, and perhaps a cultural reprieve from the U.S. entertainment scene.
According to cultural critic Jonathan Alpert, celebrities have started to feel that Hollywood is becoming a “pressure cooker.” He remarked that in today’s climate, where every social media post and acting choice is examined through a political lens, distancing oneself has become an appealing option.
Portman, who is bringing up her children, Aleph and Amalia, in Paris, views privacy as a major perk of her decision. “People here are very protective of their privacy. I think the biggest compliment is when they say, ‘It’s really free,'” she mentioned in a conversation with Net-A-Porter.
“Hollywood has become so politicized in recent years that the environment can feel like a pressure cooker for some celebrities.” — Jonathan Alpert
Celebrity real estate agent Josh Flagg noted that stars like Portman have the means to escape Los Angeles once they achieve a certain level of success in their careers. He suggests that while being in LA is essential for newcomers, established stars often prioritize privacy and quality of life over proximity to the industry. “Once you’re set in your career, you can fly to work as needed,” Flagg explained.
Portman has also expressed appreciation for the politeness noted in her children’s interactions with others in France, recalling how children greet her with “Bonjour Madame,” and thank her after visiting.
Last year, George and Amal Clooney took the plunge and became French citizens. George shared in an interview that their decision stemmed from concerns about raising children amidst Hollywood’s relentless scrutiny. He values the farm life they now embrace in France, reflecting on how it fosters better habits and benefits for his kids.
Interestingly, Alpert has pointed out that many of these stars haven’t truly abandoned Hollywood. Rather, they seem to be seeking an escape—finding a space to breathe away from the scrutiny prevalent in Los Angeles.
Flagg elaborates that France offers a unique allure with its rich culture, history, and perhaps most importantly, privacy for its high-profile residents. In contrast to life in LA, celebrities can often enjoy relatively normal lives in parts of France.
While Angelina Jolie still owns Chateau Miraval in France, she remains embroiled in disputes related to the property with ex-husband Brad Pitt. However, she has alluded to the possibility of spending more time in France, reflecting on how enriching her time there has been as both an artist and a woman.
Other stars like Aaron Paul have made similar moves—relocating with family to France for a more peaceful life after facing challenges in Los Angeles. For Paul, embracing the French culture and lifestyle seemed essential for his children’s upbringing.
Christina Milian, after moving her family to France in 2023, has stated that staying there feels like a pivotal decision. She emphasizes the importance of her children’s education and cultural exposure, expressing confidence in their ability to transition between languages.
With this shift, it seems that a significant number of Hollywood stars are taking a step back—finding solace, privacy, and perhaps a bit more freedom across the Atlantic.
