The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning to Americans about an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes in dairy products sold across the country.
The outbreak has already killed two people and is primarily spread by contaminated cheese, crema, and yogurt made by Rizzo-Lopez Foods, which is voluntarily recalling these products. This product is sold at many supermarket chains including Whole Foods and Food City.every daily mail, 26 Americans have contracted the virus and 23 more are hospitalized in 11 states. Two deaths were reported in Texas and California.
The group is recalling 61 products, including cheese, yogurt and sour cream (crema) sold under 13 brand names, including 365 Whole Foods Market and Food City. Eligible products are those sold from June 2014 to December 2023.
The agency urged people to throw away all affected products, clean refrigerators and surfaces, and contact their health care provider immediately if they develop symptoms. Symptoms include fever, muscle pain, fatigue, headache, stiff shoulders, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures.
The CDC did not survey all cases, but asked people who got sick about the foods they ate within a month of getting sick. The agency says it is still conducting interviews. Of her 22 patients interviewed, 16 (73 percent) reported eating queso fresco, cotija, or other similar cheeses.
Patients ranged in age from 1 to 88 years, with an average age of 52 years. Approximately 58% of those infected were women and 42% were men. Of those affected, 71 percent were white Americans, 5 percent were Native Americans, and 24 percent were of another race.
