Chainsaw-wielding man fatally shot by cops at senior home

A shirtless man burst into an Illinois senior living facility and began threatening elderly residents with a chainsaw before being shot and killed by police, authorities said.

In a scene straight out of a horror movie, a so-far unidentified man shot a tree around 8:45 a.m. outside the Glen of the St. Charles River, an assisted living facility about an hour west of Chicago. He was first seen trying to cut down the tree. This was announced by the St. Charles Police Department.

“Shortly before police arrived, witnesses stated that a subject entered the lobby of the building and began confronting residents with a chainsaw,” the department said.

Officers attempted to “de-escalate the situation,” but “the suspect continued to attempt to use the chainsaw on the occupants of the building and the officers,” police said.

Police attempted to tape the shirtless man, but “the attack continued,” the department said.

“The officer was then forced to fire his service firearm, striking the suspect,” who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, the statement said.

Details about the suspect, including his age and whether he has ties to the center, have not been disclosed.

Several residents of the assisted living facility and several police officers also suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, police said.
