Chancellor Merz calls on Trump to intensify pressure on Putin regarding the Ukraine conflict

German Prime Minister Calls for Increased Pressure on Russia

German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz recently emphasized the need for greater pressure on Russia amidst its ongoing war with Ukraine. He expressed his thoughts during a meeting with former President Donald Trump at the White House. This marked Merz’s first trip to Washington since taking office in May, coinciding with Ukraine’s recent drone attacks on Russian airbases.

In an interview, Merz stated, “Strength alone brings peace. If you’re weak, it invites attack.” He added that it’s ultimately up to Russia to end the conflict, asserting they could do so swiftly if they chose to. His request to Trump was clear: to join him in intensifying pressure on Russia to compel President Vladimir Putin to conclude the war.

Trump, for his part, has held back on implementing further secondary sanctions against Moscow as his administration strives to resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine and Russia recently held their second round of talks in Istanbul, which did not advance any ceasefire negotiations, although both sides agreed to conduct a significant prisoner exchange for wounded soldiers.

Earlier this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, a proposal that was ultimately dismissed by Putin. In the U.S. Senate, a bipartisan bill led by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal aims to impose increased economic penalties on Russia and its backers to encourage honest negotiations.

Blumenthal mentioned that the legislation’s primary focus is on holding nations like China accountable for supporting Putin’s war by purchasing discounted Russian oil. He asserted that without China’s economic backing, the Kremlin’s war efforts could falter.

During the press briefing, Trump remarked that he had not yet reviewed the sanctions bill but hoped his future decisions would guide the path forward.

Merz acknowledged the difficulties involved in persuading Russia to engage in meaningful discussions. He reiterated his request for Trump to take a stronger stance against Russia, indicating that several Senate bills are being drafted to address the situation. The shared aim, he insisted, is to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
