Changpeng Zhao: Donald Trump grants clemency to billionaire crypto exchange founder

Trump Pardons Cryptocurrency Exchange Founder Amid Controversy

President Donald Trump has issued a pardon for the founder of Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, sparking allegations of potential conflicts of interest.

Qiao Changpeng, known as Zhao, faced nearly four months in prison last year after Binance acknowledged shortcomings in its anti-money laundering measures.

Prosecutors highlighted that these inadequate measures might allow criminals—like child sex offenders, drug traffickers, and terrorists—to exploit cryptocurrencies for illegal transactions.

Trump’s pardon decision has raised eyebrows among some ethics experts, particularly because his personal business interests include several cryptocurrency initiatives.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt dismissed the conflict of interest claims, asserting that the Biden administration had pursued Zhao as part of an ongoing “war on cryptocurrencies.” She emphasized that every pardon request is thoroughly examined by the President.

“I discussed this case with a leading legal adviser at the White House, and it appears to be a case of overprosecution,” Leavitt explained to reporters.

However, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, a prominent critic of the cryptocurrency sector, expressed disapproval of the pardon, stating via X, “Zhao Changpeng pled guilty to money laundering charges. He then supported one of Trump’s crypto ventures and lobbied for this pardon. Today, Trump did his part.”

Binance has not addressed Warren’s comments.

Interestingly, Trump’s family is involved in a cryptocurrency venture called World Liberty Financial, which offers a stablecoin tied to the dollar. Earlier this year, a Middle Eastern investment fund announced a significant investment in Binance, further linking the two parties.

Recent financial disclosures indicated that Trump made over $57 million from World Liberty Financial in 2024.

Expressing gratitude, Zhao thanked Trump for the pardon, emphasizing a commitment to making America the leading hub for crypto innovation.

Trump remarked that Zhao had received several recommendations for clemency and noted, “Many people say he is innocent,” despite admitting that he doesn’t think he’s ever met Zhao in person.
