Chappell Roan stands up for her debated Grammys outfit featuring nipple piercings

Chapel Lawn Unveils Audacious Grammys Ensemble

Chapel Lawn is unfazed by the reactions to her bold outfit at the Grammy Awards. On February 1, she stunned many when she took off a sheer cape to showcase a unique burgundy Mugler gown that hung from her nipple piercings.

“I’m giggling because I don’t see this outfit as that outlandish,” Roan shared on Instagram, posting images of her daring look. “It’s actually quite amazing and quirky. It’s fun and a bit ridiculous—so I encourage you to embrace your free will! Thanks to everyone who voted for me!”

This outfit drew inspiration from Mugler’s Spring/Summer 1998 couture collection, which featured designs that included pierced nipples.

Interestingly, reactions online have been quite mixed. Some praised Roan, while others seemed less impressed. One commenter stated, “Some people have never seen breasts before, obviously,” adding that Roan looked “absolutely incredible!” Another user lamented, “I can’t hear anything else because the icon is visible.”

However, not all feedback was positive. One individual’s comment read, “I was planning to watch the show, but after seeing these pictures, I don’t want to witness a freak show,” noting that the prestigious event felt diminished by the outfit. Another stated, “It’s just lame. That’s not fashion; it’s simply a cry for attention.”

Despite her spirited fashion statements, Roan returned home without any awards, having been nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “The Subway.” Throughout the evening, she showcased additional looks, including a Rodarte dress from the Fall/Winter 2007 collection while presenting an award, and she later donned a 2026 design by Dilara Findikoglu.

Signed to Atlantic Records at 17, Chapel Lawn gained initial fame through YouTube. After parting ways with the label in 2020, she chose to pursue music independently, eventually signing with Island Records a year later. Her debut album, released in 2023, earned her a dedicated fan base.

However, Roan mentioned she’s still working on her next album and hasn’t released new music yet. “There’s no album right now,” she explained, emphasizing her commitment to taking the necessary time to craft her next project. “It took me five years to write the first one, and it might take that long again for the next.” She reflected, “I’m not the type of writer who can just dash things off.”
