Charles Barkley advises LeBron James to 'let go' of the Lakers amid ongoing drama

Charles Barkley Comments on LeBron James’ Future

Charles Barkley is urging LeBron James to leave Hollywood Hills. The Hall of Fame player expressed his hope for James to make a decision about his future with the Lakers, a situation that’s been surrounded by ongoing drama.

“LeBron will have to move on at some point, that’s just how it is,” Barkley mentioned during an appearance on the BETMGM network. “He had some strong numbers, but, well, let’s be honest, he hasn’t had the success expected in the last four years.”

Barkley went on to suggest that the Mavericks could hold the position of the second-best team in the NBA’s strong Western Conference, just behind the defending champions, the Thunder.

Earlier in the offseason, James seemed to have mixed feelings. His agent, Rich Paul, had some remarks earlier this summer. “I’m aware of the challenges of winning now as I look ahead,” Paul said in a statement to ESPN. “Our goal is to find what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his career, making sure each season matters.”

However, it’s not a straightforward task.

The NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement complicates things, making it nearly impossible to trade James with his salary sitting at $5.263 million this year.

Luka Dončić, in Los Angeles, seems well-positioned for the future as the Lakers look to build around new talent, but this doesn’t align with James’ 40-year-old timeline. “It’s probably Luka’s team now,” Barkley pointed out. “You don’t just sign him and not make it his team.”

James had some pointed remarks following the Lakers’ playoff elimination, where they lost to the Timberwolves in five games. A significant issue was the lack of size in the paint, which meant that James had to step into the center role.

“My man [Anthony Davis] said what he needed, and that was just the beginning,” James remarked, alluding to his earlier request for the team to acquire a center.

Less than two weeks later, Davis was traded to the Mavericks.

While Davis is now in Dallas and James remains in Los Angeles, both seem to hint at a desire to reconnect as teammates through their social media activity.

This season, the Lakers have added their former No. 1 overall pick, Deandre Ayton, to fill in for Davis.
