Charles Barkley Voices Concerns Over NBA’s New Media Deal
Charles Barkley shares the frustrations of NBA fans about the league’s current media landscape. Appearing on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” he expressed his thoughts on how challenging it has become to catch games, especially with the new media rights arrangement.
The league’s latest deal has spread games across multiple platforms—ESPN/ABC, NBC/Peacock, and Amazon’s Prime Video. Barkley is not impressed with this setup.
“It’s really tough for fans to find games these days,” he mentioned while speaking with Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser. “I think we’ve done a disservice to both the fans and the game. We need to figure out how to better communicate this to our supporters, as they’re essential for us and we want to help these networks gain traction.”
Barkley added that many folks just “don’t know” when or where the games are happening. He emphasized the significance of their 11-year, $77 billion contract, stating, “We need to be cautious because while players will thrive, it’s also vital that networks flourish.”
The new deal, initiated in July 2024, has stirred some controversy—most notably because TNT opted not to renew its role in broadcasting NBA games. Consequently, the popular “Inside The NBA,” which used to air on TNT, has shifted to ESPN and is set to increase its frequency now that football season is winding down.
Previously, the bulk of national NBA broadcasts was shared between TNT and ESPN, with NBA TV handling a smaller portion.
Barkley, who continues to co-host alongside Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal, has been vocal in advocating for a more “fan-friendly” approach in light of the media deal.
