Charles Barkley’s Remarks on WNBA Tensions

Charles Barkley has recently commented on the dynamics within the WNBA, suggesting that “there’s something going on with those women.”

The legendary player hinted that he believes the underlying cause for the noticeable tension among players is related to race.

Barkley noted a specific post by player DiJonai Carrington, who tweeted “White privilege” following a controversial foul involving her fellow player, Sophie Cunningham. Barkley described this reaction as “stupid on her part” and emphasized that the foul was indeed a dirty play.

In discussing Cunningham and her Indiana Fever teammate, Caitlin Clark, Barkley pointed out that there’s a clear animosity towards them from other players in the league. “Those girls do not like Caitlin Clark or Sophie Cunningham,” he told Michael Smerconish in an interview from late August.

He further elaborated, saying, “Whether it’s race, sexuality, or whatever, there’s something going on there.” He speculated that the tension is connected to jealousy and deeply ingrained issues regarding sexuality and race.

When pressed on the specifics of these issues, Barkley admitted he struggled to quantify the contributing factors, but he remained firm in his belief that jealousy and identity issues played a significant role in this ongoing division.

Views on Transgender Participation in WNBA

Barkley, while expressing his respect for the league, did not shy away from stating his strong position that the WNBA should strictly be for women. He articulated that he does not believe men, regardless of surgery or transition, should be part of the league.

Moreover, he criticized the WNBA for not immediately dismissing the idea of a transgender male athlete competing against female players. “Under no circumstances do I think men should play against women,” he stated emphatically.

Barkley also defended Cunningham’s stance, describing her as “telling the truth” when she expressed her intent to protect female players from potential competition with transgender individuals.

Reflecting on the perception of the WNBA, Barkley remarked that the league was not having a particularly good year and speculated that the upcoming NFL season would overshadow discussions about women’s basketball. “When’s the last time you heard something positive about the WNBA? I can’t even remember,” he added.
