The sports world doesn’t want to see Charles Barkley go.
Social media was abuzz after the legendary television commentator announced he would be retiring from broadcasting on NBA TV following Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday night.
Barkley, who has become a broadcasting icon since appearing on “NBA on TNT” shortly after retiring from the NBA in 2000, said he will retire from television after the 2024-25 NBA season.
“I’ve made a decision for myself that no matter what happens, next year will be my last year on television,” Barkley said.
“Charles Barkley, one of the greatest television personalities we have ever seen, will retire next year,” former NFL quarterback and ESPN personality Robert Griffin III wrote on X.
“This is way sadder than it should be,” the user wrote in reply.
“A national treasure,” another wrote.
“He will always be my favorite. He remains genuine, makes us laugh and never stops exuding pure class. Chuck is the best,” user X shared.
Another former quarterback, Chase Daniel, echoed the sentiment.
“No Chucks!!” he wrote.
“No one in any sport is better in the studio than Barkley. Honest. Funny. Just awesome,” PIX11’s Mark Marcis wrote.
The decision comes with Barkley’s future remaining uncertain after TNT’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, was reportedly on the verge of losing its NBA broadcasting rights.
“I’m not going to another network, but I’m passing the baton to Jamal Crawford or Vince Carter or you, Steve. [Smith]” Barkley said Friday.

Before announcing his retirement, Barkley was set to be one of the most anticipated free agents in sports media.
“I want to thank my NBA family,” Barkley added. “You’ve all been so good to me. My heart is full of joy and gratitude.”
