Charles III Travels by Carriage to Westminster Abbey to be Anointed King

A historic day in British history has officially begun. Charles III drives to Westminster Abbey and is anointed as King of England.

Charles III traveled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey to be crowned King of England, marking a historic day in British history.

The monarch traveled with his wife, Queen Camilla. The royal pair chose to travel in his coach, the relatively new Diamond His Jubilee coach, completed in 2012 and featuring modern comforts such as air conditioning and hydraulic suspension.

The first procession of the day for the soon-to-be-crowned monarch, flanked by the sovereign’s guard of royal cavalry traveled From his historic palace, down The Mall at St James’ Park, past Admiralty Arch, down Whitehall, and finally to the Anglican Church, where he was finally crowned king anointed before.

He then reverses his journey back to the palace as part of the coronation procession. This time, travel in the much more ornate Gold State Coach, a 4-ton structure of wood and gold leaf first built in the 18th century.

Prince Charles will be escorted back to Buckingham Palace by members of his family, including his sister, Princess Royal Anne, son William, Prince of Wales, and three grandchildren.

Prince Harry, the youngest of the King’s two sons, will not participate in the procession as he is not on official business.

The latter procession is likely to be remembered by Britons across the island, but may not be as enjoyable for the monarch himself. describes the travel experience as “terrifying” due to the lack of modern suspension.
