PressTV, the Iranian government website, has released multiple statements criticizing the conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Wednesday.
Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA, was touring various American universities at the start of the fall semester, fostering discussions beyond political divides. Tragically, during an event at Utah Valley University, he was shot in front of nearly 2,000 attendees. The shooter, who is 31 years old, has not been publicly identified but leaves behind a wife and two children.
The reaction to Kirk’s death has sparked sadness globally, accentuating his legacy of promoting dialogue among young people. In contrast, Iran’s Islamic regime opted to focus on disparaging Kirk, emphasizing his unwavering support for Israel and criticism of the regime, well-known for its terrorism sponsorship.
PressTV labeled Kirk a “close ally of President Donald Trump,” referring to him derogatorily as a “genocide denier” for his stance on Israel’s actions against Hamas, which Tehran frequently describes as a genocidal campaign. The regime has taken issue with Israel’s strategies aimed at targeting Hamas leaders while alleging this as a form of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, where terror organizations hold significant sway.
In its initial coverage of the incident, PressTV characterized Kirk as having an “extreme right lean,” framing his well-attended event at Utah Valley University as controversial.
“His death came amid national and international responsibilities tied to Trump’s conservative policies,” the report stated, though it failed to provide any substantiation for these claims. A recent poll from JL Partners indicated that Trump is currently enjoying his highest approval ratings.
Another article from PressTV published on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks misleadingly described Kirk as “one of the most divisive conservative voices” in the U.S., criticizing his “toxic brand of politics” which they claim has taken root within extreme elements of American conservatism.
The outlet stated Kirk denied genocide in Gaza and misrepresented the Palestinian struggle, ironically labeling Israel’s actions as upholding “democratic values.”
Kirk was known for his strong support for Israel, often declaring it necessary to oppose Iran. Reports indicate he feared for his life, suggesting that changing his stance might have led to retaliation from the Israeli government.
“His rhetoric was critically oriented against the Iranian government,” PressTV noted, clearly highlighting his frequent portrayal of Iran as the principal adversary, particularly concerning its nuclear ambitions, which he deemed a threat to stability in the region.
While Kirk vocally opposed Iran’s regime, he expressed concerns about U.S. military intervention in the region. In a 2019 piece for Breitbart, he advocated using economic pressure rather than military force to challenge Iran’s government, believing that the country’s economy would falter without direct conflict.
Kirk characterized Iran as a “terrorist regime” bent on broader global ambitions, asserting its intent to impose Sharia law and eliminate Israel.
During Trump’s second term, Kirk seemed to reconsider a full-scale war with Iran, remarking on the historical strength of Persia and suggesting that engaging in open conflict was unwise.
Following Kirk’s death, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly honored him, revealing that Kirk had planned another visit to Israel soon.
“Charlie Kirk was murdered for speaking the truth and defending freedom,” Netanyahu stated. “He was a staunch advocate for Jewish-Christian civilization. I had spoken with him just two weeks ago and invited him to Israel. Unfortunately, that visit will never happen. We lost a remarkable person.”
