Charlie Kirk’s Concerns Over NYC Mayoral Race
Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, has expressed his belief that Zoran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, can be stopped in the New York City mayoral race if the opposition rallies behind a strong alternative to the Democratic candidate.
Last week’s surprising primary saw Mamdani win against former Governor Cuomo in the ranked-choice vote, prompting political strategists and donors to strategize on how to prevent his victory in November. Cuomo and current New York Mayor Eric Adams are currently running as independent candidates.
In a discussion with Fox News Digital, Kirk suggested that Curtis Sliwa, head of the Republican nomination Guardian Angels, should reconsider his candidacy.
“He’s a newer candidate, and I think he’s a decent guy,” Kirk said, adding that he feels Sliwa may struggle in the race. “If Eric Adams isn’t exactly the favorite right now, you have to run on issues like crime and quality of life. We need common-sense solutions and unification. We don’t want these radical elements introduced into America’s major cities.”
Kirk labeled Mamdani as a “campus riot” candidate, warning that he represents a concerning future for the Democratic Party.
Sliwa responded to a request for comments from Fox News Digital, citing a recent poll indicating he trailed at 16% in a four-way race, with Mamdani leading at 35% and Cuomo following. The survey also revealed that Adams had the weakest approval rating.
“Eric Adams set the stage for Zoran Mamdani’s rise by performing poorly over the last three and a half years,” Sliwa stated.
Sliwa, a GOP candidate who lost the 2021 mayoral race to Adams by a significant margin, has stated his commitment to remaining in the race. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to bolster Adams’s campaign against Mamdani’s surprising success.
Kirk noted that Mamdani’s radical positions might be his Achilles’ heel, saying that while his proposal to freeze rent might resonate with some voters, it could be detrimental in terms of safety and crime, an issue that affects everyone in New York.
He acknowledged Mamdani’s adeptness at using social media to rally supporters, particularly among college students, highlighting how many people tend to vote for Democrats without much thought.
“There’s a sentiment among some that New York City is lost to liberalism,” Kirk remarked, stressing the importance of the upcoming mayoral race. “We cannot abandon America’s largest city to what I consider the extreme left. The future of our society could very well hinge on what happens in New York.”
