Remembering Charlie Kirk: A Look at His Impact on Young Voters

As conservatives reflect on the legacy of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, ahead of the upcoming celebration of his life in Arizona, many acknowledge his influence in helping President Donald Trump connect with younger voters in 2024.

Former TPUSA staff member Anthony DeWitt remarked that the grassroots efforts Kirk championed likely played a critical role in motivating young people to engage in the electoral process.

“Charlie really created something special,” DeWitt noted. “He amplified the voices of newcomers like me in politics, giving us a platform similar to what established politicians have.” He emphasized the importance of grassroots initiatives, saying, “You can knock on doors, engage younger voters, and organize meetings. That was vital for winning the 2024 election.”

According to Fox News voter analysis, Trump garnered 47% of the votes from individuals aged 18-29, while former Vice President Kamala Harris managed to capture 51% of that demographic.

In Michigan, Trump managed a slight lead among young voters, with 50% compared to Harris’s 48%. In Arizona, where TPUSA is headquartered, he also approached 48%. Despite losing ground in these states in 2020, Trump’s efforts have shown improvement, marking an 11% increase among the same age group. Four years prior, former President Joe Biden had dominated that demographic with 61%.

A Republican strategist, Colin Reid, pointed out that Kirk was instrumental in expanding the Republican Party’s appeal to younger individuals. He noted, “It was previously unthinkable for GOP candidates to compete so closely with Democrats, especially against figures with significant backing from Hollywood. Yet, that dynamic shifted in 2024.”

Kirk’s efforts, according to Reid, helped young people not only consider the conservative movement but also embrace and defend its principles as a pathway to success and fulfillment.

Tyler Bowyer, a leader at Turning Point Action, mentioned plans for the “Charlie Kirk Election” slated for 2026, which will take place at Arizona State University. He also hinted that “2028 will be the year for Kirkvance’s election,” referring to the organization’s expectations to rally support behind Vice President JD Vance as Trump’s potential successor.
