Charlie Kirk’s Alleged Assassin Seeks More Time for Evidence Review

In a hearing held on Monday, the attorney representing the accused assassin of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, requested additional time to sift through a large volume of evidence. The alleged perpetrator, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, appeared from the Utah County Jail.

Robinson faces several charges, including murder, which carries the potential for the death penalty according to the prosecutor. The judge noted that both sides agree on the significant amount of evidence collected since the incident on September 10th.

Kathryn Nester was appointed as Robinson’s attorney just last week. During the hearing, she indicated her intent to insist on a preliminary hearing to assess whether there is sufficient evidence to continue with the trial.

The judge approved her request and set the next hearing for 10 a.m. on October 30th.

Nester’s request for more time comes on the heels of an earlier hearing on September 16th, during which a pretrial protection order was established for Erica Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow. This request was granted by the judge.

Just two hours prior to the current hearing, Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray formally filed charges against Robinson, which included aggravated murder and a felony charge relating to the reckless discharge of a firearm that led to serious injuries. Gray asserted that Robinson had targeted Kirk due to his political views and claimed there were “aggravating factors” surrounding the case.

Interestingly, in messages exchanged with his former roommate, Robinson indicated he had the chance to “take Charlie Kirk out” and intended to go through with it. Moreover, it was revealed that Robinson had been dating a roommate who was transitioning genders, adding another layer of complexity to the case.

The narrative surrounding Robinson’s motives stands in stark contrast to some portrayals of him within media, complicating the discourse around this tragic event.
