Charlize Theron Emphasizes Independence for Her Children

Charlize Theron is clear about her intentions for her kids: they won’t be sheltered by Hollywood.

In a thoughtful discussion, the Oscar-winning actress shared insights into her parenting style, highlighting her aim to cultivate independence and a solid work ethic in her daughters from a young age.

“First of all, your first car is going to be a Datsun, because it crashes,” Theron remarked during her appearance on the “Therapath with Jake Shane” podcast. “You’re going to improve it somehow. You’re a new driver. So we can’t just get a nice car right off the bat. We need some experience, and you’ll earn it.”

Theron strongly believes that financial independence is essential for children.

“It’s too early to say where they’ll end up…I don’t want to support them indefinitely, so they need to find a job that pays,” she stated.

When prompted about her daughters having summer jobs, she responded without hesitation.

“That’s right. Every time I go to Starbucks, I think, ‘Look at this…do you see how friendly they are? They have to be that friendly, like they start getting ready at 6 a.m. every morning.’”

Theron, who adopted her daughters Jackson, now 12, and August, aged 9, has always been open about her journey as a single mother. This decision, she has indicated, is very intentional.

In a July 2025 interview with Alex Cooper on the popular podcast Call Her Daddy, Theron referred to her choice as “one of the healthiest decisions I’ve ever made.”

“With women, it’s often portrayed as, ‘There must be something wrong with her.’ She can’t keep a man, instead of recognizing, ‘Wow, she’s really living her truth,’” she remarked.

Theron elaborated on the sense of freedom she has found in motherhood on her own terms.

“I look at them and think, ‘Do you know how amazing it is to live the way you want to live and experience motherhood the way you choose?’”

She added, “You don’t have to leave everything to the man,” expressing that she feels she has successfully faced the challenges of co-parenting and has “broken the cycle.”
