Charlotte gets ready for federal immigration raids that officials criticize as 'invasion'

Charlotte Prepares for Federal Immigration Enforcement Actions

Officials in Charlotte, North Carolina, are on alert for a looming federal immigration crackdown, which they are calling an invasion. The city has committed to supporting immigrants in light of what they describe as oppressive measures by the federal government.

Local leaders are urging residents to engage in peaceful protests and to monitor the activities of federal operatives from afar. They expressed concern over the Trump administration’s actions, particularly targeting immigrants during operations in other cities.

“It’s a bizarre time we’re living in,” said Susan Rodriguez McDowell, a Mecklenburg County Commissioner with deep family roots in immigration. “It’s concerning to see media personalities in positions of power, and unfortunately, our city feels the effects of this chaotic agenda.”

This gathering occurred shortly after Sheriff Garry McFadden revealed he had been informed by federal agencies that U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents would commence immigration operations as soon as Saturday or early next week.

Similar federal actions have recently taken place in cities like Chicago and Los Angeles, where agents have targeted immigrant communities, raiding businesses and places of worship.

“We have witnessed the fallout elsewhere,” remarked Democratic state Representative Jordan Lopez. “It includes armed agents confronting civilians in their homes at night. It’s a distressing pattern.”

Officials highlighted that they had yet to receive any formal communication from the presidential administration regarding operations in Charlotte. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department clarified that it does not have jurisdiction over federal immigration laws and was not involved in any planning.

Local groups are preparing volunteers to safely document these immigration actions and to inform migrants of their rights should a crackdown occur.

Hector Vaca, from Action NC, labeled the federal government’s maneuvers as an “invasion” and a “racist terror campaign.”

President Trump has predominantly targeted Democratic-led cities within his immigration strategy, and earlier this year reversed a rule that shielded sensitive locations like schools and hospitals from immigration raids.

Moreover, the National Guard has been deployed to assist immigration officials in cities like Chicago and Washington, D.C., which has led to legal challenges from state officials.

Governor Josh Stein noted the vast majority of those detained in federal actions typically have no criminal convictions, including American citizens themselves. “If you observe any inappropriate actions, please record them and report them to local law enforcement. They are here to maintain community safety long after the federal agents depart,” he emphasized.

JD Mazuela Arias, a Colombian national who became a naturalized citizen in 2021, echoed concerns about the apprehensions. She vowed not to allocate local resources for immigration enforcement, asserting that the recent sweeps appear to be more about maintaining quotas than ensuring public safety.

“Our Queen City will not be a place of fear,” added an incoming City Council member. “We will not mistake cruelty for safety and will resist the politics of intimidation.”

Cameron Pruett, who heads the Charlotte Social Justice Freedom Center, encouraged the community to support immigrant-owned businesses and take peaceful actions, reminding everyone to approach this situation with clarity and compassion.
