Charlotte residents shocked after 3 US Marshals Task Force members die, 5 other officers injured in shootout

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Residents in Charlotte, North Carolina, who live just a few doors down from the scene of Monday’s deadly shooting, are in a state of shock after gunfire erupted in their quiet neighborhood Monday afternoon.

The shootout began around 1:30 p.m. Monday as members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were executing a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. After several hours and dozens of gunshots, authorities confirmed that three members of the task force had been shot dead and five other police officers wounded.

“There was a huge amount of gunshots, people in yards, people hiding behind cars. Firefighters were hiding behind fire engines. It was a very rough situation,” Sarah said. a neighbor who asked to be identified told FOX News Digital.

Sarah said she and her husband heard more than 50 gunshots during an ordinary day.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings confirmed at a news conference Monday that police had a warrant out and that the suspect who initially fired at officers “died in the front yard at the end of it all.”

Police believe two other persons of interest may have been involved in the shootout, who were taken to the police station for further investigation. One of the persons of interest is a 17-year-old boy, police said. The other is a woman.

“It’s truly a tragedy. Those people work every day to protect us.”

“I was in a state of shock,” Sarah said. “It’s truly a tragedy. Those guys go to work every day to protect us, and I don’t think they have time to stay put and fulfill federal warrants, but for something like this to happen. I don’t think they expected it. Their family is… really crazy.”

The shootout occurred in the 5000 block of Galway Drive, which was cordoned off by police for much of the day.

Another neighbor named Jordan told Fox News Digital that during the shootout, he witnessed a police officer come outside and throw up. He also witnessed a white man, covered in blood and appearing to be deceased, being taken away by a SWAT vehicle.

“It’s a pretty safe area,” he said of the area. “There’s a lot of families here. They’re going to see movies in the park and do other things.”

A third neighbor, who spoke to FOX News Digital on condition of anonymity, said the home where the shooting occurred was usually quiet. She also witnessed authorities carrying a bloodied man into a car during the shootout.

“I can’t say if it was a police officer or a marshal, but I did see one of them get into the truck and there was blood all over him,” she said. “He was wearing normal clothes. He wasn’t wearing any clothes,” he added.he doesn’t have any uniform [on]. ”

A total of eight law enforcement officers were shot and killed. Three officers of the U.S. Marshals Task Force (one deputy and two task force officers) were killed. Four Charlotte police officers were injured, one seriously, and another U.S. Marshals Task Force officer was also injured.

Jennings called the incident “the most tragic incident I’ve ever been involved in.”

“I’ve been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for 32 years. I can’t remember an incident where three officers were arrested.” [injured] Three people were also killed in the same incident, one in critical condition, and another injured by gunshots.”

One CMPD officer remains in critical condition.

“Today is a tragic day for Charlotte. Every time a law enforcement officer is killed or injured in the line of duty, our entire profession is tarnished,” Jennings said in a statement Monday. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers and the other officers, including our four CMPD officers. The courage of these officers and all others who responded to the scene. is unparalleled.”

He added: “In the face of danger, our people have stood up and sworn an oath to protect and serve. The days, months and years that follow this senseless tragedy will no doubt be difficult. It will be. But I couldn’t be more proud.” I am confident that our local, state, and federal first responders will come together today and that will be what will get us through. ”

“Our hearts are heavy tonight as we remember the lives that were shattered in today’s horrific shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina,” the U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement Monday.
