There’s a saying that all is fair in love and war, and maybe they should add college football trash talk to that list. Over the years, I’ve seen some really nasty exchanges among fans of rival teams on social media.
It seems like nothing is off limits, but sometimes, just sometimes, fans take things too far, leading to some hurt feelings.

And surprisingly, this back-and-forth isn’t limited to faceless accounts online. Recently, two notable former college quarterbacks had what you might call a classic social media spat live on air.
Chase Daniel and Tim Tebow were on ESPN’s “SEC Nation,” broadcasting from Auburn’s campus and discussing the upcoming game against the Florida Gators.

If you don’t know, Tebow is a Florida alumnus who won a Heisman trophy and two national championships during his tenure, so when Daniel threw out a backhanded “compliment” about Tebow’s old team, it caught everyone off guard.
“I do think Florida could be the next Vandy,” Daniel remarked, eliciting smirks from his fellow hosts. “Let me just explain something.”
Tebow was not having any of it. He seemed ready to walk off the set in disbelief.

“Chase, you can’t say that,” Tebow shot back, clearly agitated. “That is the most derogatory thing I have ever heard in my life.”

To Daniel’s credit, he later clarified that he believes Florida could surprise people in 2026, similar to how Vanderbilt did last season.
But, let’s face it: he knew exactly what he was doing when he made that comparison.
If you’re an older college football fan, you probably remember Vanderbilt as one of the easiest wins in the SEC. During the 90s and 2000s, they were practically a guaranteed victory for the Gators—everyone had their way with them. So, suggesting Florida, even favorably, could be compared to them understandably set Tebow and anyone who remembers those eras into a bit of a frenzy.

“I get your point,” Tebow said, visibly distressed. “But the wording, ‘Florida could be Vandy?'”
I get that the last decade and a half haven’t been championship parades in Gainesville, but still, Chase, don’t jinx Tebow and the Gators like that.
