Cheers to the cheeseburger, a classic American dish and a favorite for the 4th of July

The Cheeseburger: An American Icon

So, who among us doesn’t take time to indulge in a cheeseburger, especially on July 4th? It’s practically the quintessential American food, standing proud among our cherished dishes.

Before we dive into the cheeseburger, though, let’s consider its predecessor—the hamburger. Its history is a bit murky, and various stories contest its origins.

So, how did the hamburger come to be? One popular tale credits Uncle Fletcher Davis, who, in the late 1880s, is said to have crafted the first burger at his small café in Henderson County Courthouse Square. His creation later earned acclaim at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, where it was dubbed “the hamburger.” Another account suggests that a teenager named Charlie Nagreen attempted to sell a more successful version of meatballs at a Wisconsin fair in 1885. Meanwhile, Frank and Charles Menches ran into a meat shortage at the Erie County Fair that same year and, after some quick thinking, decided to substitute ground beef for sausage.

Or perhaps the title belongs to Louis’s Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut. This spot still operates today and promotes itself as the original burger creator. Though, it’s worth noting that they did eventually add cheese to their beef creation.

When we shift our focus to the cheeseburger, it seems to have found its footing about 101 years ago. In 1924, a 16-year-old named Lionel Clark Sternberger is credited with inventing it while working as a short-term chef at his father’s Pasadena restaurant.

For many, cheeseburgers are synonymous with fast food, available in countless joints across the U.S. But which places truly serve the finest cheeseburgers? What factors come into play? Is it the quality of the patty, the softness of the bun, the type of cheese, or how it’s layered with toppings, maybe even bacon? It’s tricky, and honestly, personal preferences are likely to evolve day by day.

Do you know of any unique cheeseburger spots in your area? If not, there are plenty of sources to explore that showcase the best local varieties. These can introduce you to lesser-known gems as well as popular favorites.

As we reminisce over these tasty burgers, it’s important to acknowledge that the best places don’t always have to align with national brands; sometimes, those small, family-run establishments are the true treasures of the culinary landscape.
