Chef Gordon Ramsay Says He’s ‘Lucky to Be Here’ After Terrible Bike Accident

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay says he feels lucky to be alive after being involved in a serious cycling accident in Connecticut last week.

Ramsay took to Instagram to update his fans about the horrific accident, with a message for anyone wanting to get on a bike.

“A very important message to all the dads out there… Wear your helmet!” he wrote in an Instagram caption.

“I was in a bad accident this week while riding my bike in Connecticut. I didn’t break any bones or have any major injuries, but I do have a bit of bruising and look like a purple potato,” he added.

In a video accompanying the message, the chef lifted his shirt to reveal severe bruising that covered his entire left side.

“I’m grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London who treated and examined me, but I’m most grateful for the helmet that saved my life,” Ramsay explained.

“Have a great Father’s Day. Take care.”

“It’s been a total shock,” Ramsay, 57, said in the video. “Honestly, I’m blessed to be here. The incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses, everyone at the hospital who’s seen me this week has been amazing. But honestly, you have to put your helmet on. It doesn’t matter how short the journey is.” [about] “The fact is that helmets cost money. But helmets are important. Even if you’re with kids, even if you’re just going on a short trip, you should wear a helmet.”

“I’m lucky to be standing here right now,” he added. “I’m in pain. It’s been a tough week. I’m getting through it. But I can’t express to you how important it is to have a helmet on.”

by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Approximately 800 Americans die in bicycle accidents each year and more than 45,000 are injured.

According to the NHSTA, the most common time for bicycle accidents to occur is between 6pm and 9pm, and 86% of fatalities were men, with an average age of 49.
