Cheney doubts Johnson will carry out 'constitutional obligations' to certify election

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) questioned whether House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) will fulfill his “constitutional obligation” to certify the 2024 election in an interview Sunday. That's what he said.

in interview “Meet the press,” NBC News' Kristen Welker said, referring to her conversation with Johnson earlier Sunday. Mr. Welker had been pressing Mr. Johnson to certify the election results.

“No matter who wins, will you certify the results?” she asked the House speaker, an ardent supporter of former President Trump.

“Regardless of that, of course, if the election is free, fair and legal, we pray and hope that it will be so,” Johnson responded. “There's a lot of work being done to make sure that's true. I think this is definitely going to be huge. I think the next president is Donald J. Trump, but that's not true. It won’t happen soon.”

Asked if she believed that this election was free and fair and that there would be a peaceful transfer of power, Cheney responded, “I do not believe that Mike Johnson will fulfill his constitutional duties.'' No,” he told Welker.

“And if you look at his actions in 2020, he knew, and specifically knew, that the fraud claims that Donald Trump was making and repeating were false.” said the Wyoming Republican. . “We had a very clear and specific conversation about that. He knew that the court had clearly found those allegations to be false. He knew that they were not true. I knew that.”

Cheney became a prominent critic of President Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. She was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach the former president following the riot and supported Vice President Harris in this year's election.

Earlier this month, Cheney appeared with Harris at a campaign rally in Wisconsin, urging Americans to “stand with the truth and reject the depravity and brutality of Donald Trump, and call on Kamala Harris to be president in their place.” We ask for your cooperation in selecting them.”

Cheney appeared on “Meet the Press” and said Johnson “has a criminal record of repeatedly doing things that he knew were wrong and unconstitutional to appease Donald Trump. ” he said.

“And frankly, you just saw that sycophancy on display,” Cheney added. “So I think that's the case. It's very concerning.”

The Hill has reached out to Johnson's office for comment.
