Cheney says Republicans against Trump but not backing Harris 'not enough'

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) on Sunday called on Republicans who oppose former President Trump but have not publicly endorsed Vice President Harris to “step up” and support her to help stop Trump's reelection.

“Given how close this election is, if you're voting, especially in battleground states, you need to take it a step further if you truly recognize the threat that Donald Trump poses. If so, it's not enough to simply say, 'I'm not going to vote for him,'” Cheney said on ABC News' “This Week.”

Cheney, who has become one of Trump's most vocal critics since the January 6 attack on the Capitol, voiced her support for Harris last week, saying she “doesn't have the luxury of writing down the name of the candidate.”

“I also want to remind them that this is a secret ballot, so I hope as many people as possible will publicly voice their opinions,” she said. “But at the end of the day, you have to wrestle with your conscience while you're at the polls. And I expect that when the time comes, we'll see a lot more Republicans and independents showing up, and they'll make the decision they have to make, the right decision.”

Meanwhile, some Republicans have said they will not vote for Harris and will instead endorse someone else, including Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Maryland Republican governor and candidate for the Senate, Larry Hogan.

Cheney's endorsement of Harris joins other anti-Trump Republicans, including former Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan of Georgia, who have publicly endorsed the vice president.

The day after Cheney publicly announced her support for Harris, her father, former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, also endorsed the vice president.

In a statement, the former vice president said Americans have an “obligation” to uphold the Constitution, regardless of party affiliation.

“In the 248-year history of our country, there has never been a greater threat to our nation than Donald Trump,” he wrote. “He tried to steal the last election, using lies and violence to maintain his hold on power after it was rejected by voters. He cannot be entrusted with power again.”
