Cheryl Hines recently recounted a frightening experience at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where she and her husband, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., had to be evacuated following what sounded like gunshots.
In her Instagram story, Hines shared, “I just got back from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. It was such a wild moment.” She explained how the din of celebration turned chaotic when they heard a gunshot, prompting everyone to duck under tables. “Bobby’s security team surrounded us and got us out of there; at one point, they even had to lift me onto a chair since I was in heels and a gown,” she added. They were quickly taken along back roads to safety.
In a follow-up social media post, Hines reassured her followers, saying, “Thanks to everyone who checked in on us. We’re fine. I’m just in my pajamas now, watching the news like everyone else. Stay safe out there.”
The alleged shooter, identified as Cole Allen, reportedly caused a disturbance at the event before a shot was fired. Eyewitness accounts describe the sudden panic that ensued, with attendees seeking shelter under tables.
President Donald Trump was also present and was promptly escorted out of the ballroom as chaos erupted. Videos captured the moment as the crowd reacted in fear. Given the context, the situation was particularly poignant for many attendees, including Trump and others like Steve Scalise, who have personal connections to political violence.
During a press conference later, Trump commended the quick response from law enforcement, stating, “They did an incredible job managing the situation.” He emphasized the importance of acting decisively in such situations.
Cole Allen, 31, from California, was taken into custody following the incident. The evening’s festivities were overshadowed by this alarming turn of events, a stark reminder of the violent realities that can interrupt even the most glamorous occasions.
