Chevron Championship: The 5 biggest names to miss the cut

The LPGA Tour is at the halfway point of its first major, the Chevron Championship.

Nelly Korda is in incredible contention for her fifth straight tournament win, and the top of the leaderboard is packed with young players.

The teams tied for top 73 ended the weekend while the other half of the field was sent packing. Some of golf’s top-ranked female players missed out on a spot at Charlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.

The wind was strong, gusting over 20 miles per hour, and the women had a bit of a hard time. As a result, some of the LPGA’s best players had a short week.

Meanwhile, defending champion Lilia Vu withdrew from the tournament before Thursday’s round due to a back injury.

So, here are the five big names who missed out on the LPGA’s first major championship.

rose chan

Rose Chan finished the first two days with 74 wins and 75 losses, finishing the tournament with five overs. He finished in the top 10 in three of the four majors he played in last year, but it’s a shock to see the young phenom return home so soon.

Despite a double bogey on No. 10, the Chevron rookie was unable to score. On Friday, she shot a par of 14 and had just one birdie. Zhang missed the cut by three strokes. Not missing a birdie putt that second day cost her.

lexi thompson

Lexi Thompson struggled on Thursday, shooting no more than bogey in her first six holes of the tournament and posting a 6-over 78.

Thompson shot a 2-over 74, four strokes better, on Friday, but like Chan, he struggled to improve his score. She recorded one double, nine bogeys and three birdies over two days, finishing the tournament at 8 over.

leona maguire

Despite finishing runner-up to Nelly Korda at the T-Mobile LPGA Match Play event at Shadow Creek, Leona Maguire missed out on the spot. On Thursday, Maguire shot even par to stay above the cut line.

But it was Friday’s round where we saw her struggle. On this day, Maguire shot a 4-over 76 with six bogeys and two birdies. She hit the fairway and green only six times, and all day she was out of position on the green.

Celine Boutier

World No. 3 Celine Boutier had a tough time at The Woodlands. Like other female players who returned home early, Boutier also failed to score a goal. She was 75-73 through her first two rounds. On Thursday, he finished with a 3-over 75 with four bogeys and one birdie.

He improved by two strokes on Friday, but after two birdies in the first four holes, he lost his form with a double bogey in the fifth hole and one bogey in the ninth hole. Boutier also made bogey on the 11th hole and fell short by two strokes.

Go Jinyoung

Ko Jin-young is ranked 6th in the world according to the Rolex World Golf Rankings. She and Boutier are two of the highest-ranked players heading to her hometown. Young Coe missed the cut by just one stroke after going 76-71 on Thursday and Friday.

She made a double bogey on No. 12 in the first round, finishing with a 4-over 76 with four bogeys and two birdies. Young Ko was much better in the second round. She hit 15 of 18 greens on Friday, but she struggled with her putter.
