Chicago man, Emonte Morgan, found guilty of killing Police Officer Ella French

On Tuesday, a man was found guilty of fatally shooting a Chicago police officer, wounding his partner, and then firing at a third officer in August 2021.

Emonte Morgan, 23, of Chicago, was convicted of killing Officer Ella French and injuring Officer Carlos Yanez Jr. during a traffic stop on the city’s South Side.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours and found him guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, and possession and use of a firearm as a felon.

French, 29, was killed and Yanez was injured after they stopped an SUV with an expired tag.

An email seeking comment was sent to Morgan’s public defender. The defense rested without calling any witnesses.

Morgan’s brother, Eric Morgan, pleaded guilty in October to charges of aggravated unlawful use of a firearm and obstruction of justice.

A third man, Jamel Dungey of Hammond, Indiana, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison in December after pleading guilty to federal firearms charges for illegally purchasing the gun used to kill French. I received it.
