Chicago Man Shoots at Cops While on Pretrial Release for Gun Cases

An 18-year-old from Chicago, Illinois, has been charged with shooting two off-duty police officers while on pretrial release in juvenile court on two felony firearms cases, authorities said.

On the evening of June 3, two officers were in a vehicle in the 1200 block of West 13th Street when multiple shots were fired in their direction. Court Documents CWB Chicago Obtained state.

Off-duty officers said a man on a motorcycle was seen firing shots at them and a black sedan that may have been involved in the incident was also seen in the area.

When Chicago police reviewed surveillance footage, investigators “immediately” recognized Derrien Johnson as the shooter, according to the arrest report.

At the time of the shooting, the man was out awaiting trial on two weapons charges he was charged with as a juvenile.

Prosecutors alleged Johnson fired shots “multiple times” at the officer’s vehicle.

Judge Susana Ortiz, in ordering Johnson detained, said the teen has already admitted to firing the gun.

“One of Ortiz’s reasons for detaining Johnson was the fact that he was on juvenile release on two weapons-related cases,” CWB Chicago reported.

The teen was charged with two counts of discharging a firearm into a vehicle he was occupying and manufacturing and delivering marijuana. No charges were filed regarding the victims’ occupations because prosecutors could not confirm whether Johnson knew the victims were police officers.

Johnson is the 19th person to have attempted or allegedly succeeded in shooting someone while on pretrial release in Chicago in 2024, according to local media.
