Chicago mayor promises to oppose Trump’s involvement, issues protective order

Chicago mayor vows to fight Trump intervention, signs protective order

Chicago’s Response to Potential National Guard Deployment

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has taken a significant step by signing an executive order aimed at addressing the potential National Guard deployment by President Trump.

This order, signed on Saturday, outlines the city’s commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of its residents amidst concerns over possible militarized immigration actions or National Guard intervention.

In the order, Johnson explicitly urges Trump to reconsider his threats of deploying the National Guard in Chicago, reinforcing that local law enforcement should remain under the control of the Chicago Police Department.

“The City of Chicago will do everything we can to protect our democracy and support our communities. With this executive order, we send a strong message to the federal government. We are opposed to unconstitutional military occupations in our cities,” Johnson stated.

He added, “We do not want military checkpoints or armored vehicles on our streets, nor do we want families to be separated. We will take the necessary actions to uphold the rights of all Chicagoans.” This executive order is framed as a crucial part of the city’s ongoing effort to resist federal overreach.

This development comes as the current administration announced plans to prioritize reducing crime rates in Chicago, according to city data.

Comments from various quarters have been critical of the city’s leadership. One critique suggested that Chicago appears directionless under Mayor Johnson’s governance, labeling him as “grossly incompetent.”

Both Johnson and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker are against the potential National Guard deployment proposed by Trump.

Reports indicate that the administration is contemplating the use of a naval base near Chicago to facilitate efforts aimed at curbing immigration. This plan might involve assigning over 200 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents, utilizing the Great Lakes at the Navy Station as a staging area.

A spokesperson for the White House, Abigail Jackson, commented, “The community would be much safer if Democrats focused on tackling crime in their own cities instead of engaging in political stunts to criticize the president. Crime is not a partisan issue.” She referred to the recent successes of the Trump administration in managing violent crime in Washington, D.C., urging Democratic leaders to take note.
