A pregnant Chicago mother said she lost her unborn baby after being kicked multiple times in the stomach, punched and pepper-sprayed by a group of teenagers while returning home from a date with her husband.
The woman, who gave her name only as Nina, said the assailants violently attacked the couple in the city’s Streeterville area at about 8.30pm last Friday, leaving them badly bruised and beaten. Fox 32 report.
“It all happened from behind us. First someone came up to my husband and hit him on the head,” Nina said, describing the moment her husband was attacked.
“He looked at me and said, ‘Run.’
Nina, who was two weeks pregnant at the time, begged the gang to leave her alone but the teenager attacked her, dragged her to the ground and ripped out strands of her hair.
“I started screaming and she started pepper spraying me,” Nina recalled.
The traumatised mother said she was repeatedly kicked and punched in the stomach.
Doctors announced that she had miscarried after the brutal assault.
“We believe in faith and it’s not what’s supposed to happen, so we don’t know why this happened to us,” Nina said.
Nina said she tried to help her husband who was being attacked, but a group of youths pinned him to the ground and beat him.
“They’re not stealing anything. They’re saying, ‘These streets are ours. They belong to us. You can’t walk around,'” the mother said.
“I was wearing a nice dress and high heels, and when I was on a date with my husband, they dragged my dress along the ground and said, ‘These streets are ours. You can’t walk around hopping around in your little dress,'” she continued.
“They said things that didn’t make any sense to me because they don’t know me personally.”
When police eventually arrived, the gang dispersed.
Police arrested two of the attackers – a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl – and charged them with misdemeanor assault.
It was not immediately clear whether further charges were pending.
