Chicago police arrest suspect in murder of off-duty officer Luis Huesca

A man wanted in connection with the killing of an off-duty Chicago police officer last month has been taken into custody, according to Chicago police.

The department announced that its agents and the U.S. Marachals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 22-year-old Xavier Tate Jr. in Glendale Heights, Illinois, on Wednesday night on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Tate’s arrest came five days after he was identified as a suspect in the murder of Chicago police officer Luis Huesca, 30.

“We ask the people of the city to continue to support the Huesca family by keeping them in their prayers as they continue to mourn the loss of their beloved son, brother, and uncle,” CPD said in a statement.

Huesca was shot and killed in the Gage Park neighborhood in the early morning hours of April 21st as he was returning home from work. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said the man was still in his uniform, but had other clothing on top.

He was shot nearly 20 times with a firearm that had been converted into an automatic rifle, FOX 32 Chicago previously reported.

Huesca’s car was stolen during the incident and was found nearby a short time later. His military weapon and badge were not found at the scene, officials said. Chicago Sun-Times.

When Chicago police identified Tate as a suspect on April 26, they released video footage of him inside the convenience store and on the sidewalk outside.

Tate was previously arrested on March 6 for criminal trespass at a residence in Olympia Fields. FOX32 reported. Citing court documents. He was scheduled to appear in court for the case last Wednesday.

Crime Stoppers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, the FBI, and the Fraternal Order of Police were offering a combined $100,000 reward for information leading to Tate’s arrest.

Huesca, who was killed two days before his 31st birthday, had been with the Chicago Police Department for six years. He passed away on Monday.
