This week, the city of Chicago will return to the public five parks used to temporarily house illegal immigrants, a move that has frustrated many residents.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office announced that starting this Saturday, the city will “depressurize” temporary shelters at five Park District facilities. Once all migrants have been relocated to other shelters, the city’s park district will begin the process of restoring the park for public use.

The mayor’s office said migrants from Gage Park, Broadway Armory Park, Brands Park, Leone Park and Piotrowski Park will be moved to nearby shelters over the next few weeks, with “no disruption to schooling or work.” “We will keep it to a minimum.”
Mayor Johnson credited his administration’s efforts and those of other Chicagoans who “worked proactively to welcome new arrivals by providing shelter in Park District field housing during a time of clear need.” “I’m proud,” he said.

“We are grateful to the council and community for welcoming our new neighbors with open arms, and we look forward to returning these park facilities to their original use in time for summer programs,” Johnson said in a statement. I’m happy about that,” he said.
The news comes days after the mayor touted the city as “open” and “tolerant” toward illegal immigration. But he identified the current situation as “unsustainable” without federal intervention.
