A Chicago man gifted his daughter his eyesight after he passed away last year.

When Crystal Jones was born, her eyes were not fully formed, and over time she went blind. fox 32 chicago report. At one point, she considered a stem cell transplant in hopes of improving her vision, her report states.

“My father has diabetes and had recently had cataract surgery. Because of those conditions, we did not consider him a potential transplant donor,” Jones said. “He always said he was the one who discovered that I was visually impaired, because when I was about six months old, he finally decided to find out what was going on. He took me to the hospital. So he was very proud of that fact.”

Jones’ father was on the verge of going blind himself before he died. Despite his condition, he was in perfect condition for the transplant. A few days after he passed away, Jones had his stem cells transplanted into both eyes.

“It was kind of amazing that he gave me sight after he passed away, so it’s bittersweet,” Jones said. “I love him and I’m grateful to him, and I know he’s dancing in heaven with so much excitement that he was able to donate stem cells to me.”

The procedure was overseen by Eversight, a global nonprofit eye bank network founded in Chicago in 1947.

“We have experienced many cases where people are actually blind, but their cornea and eye surface are still intact, allowing them to offer the gift of vision to others,” said Diane, CEO and President of Eversight. said. Hollingsworth. “Every donor can give the gift of sight to two more people.”

Eversight believes Jones was the first recipient to receive cells from a deceased parent. As a result of the procedure, Jones said she can now read and see her family clearly.

“I’m truly blessed. It’s a miracle and I’m so grateful,” Jones said.
