Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Wednesday supported kicker Harrison Butker, who came under heavy criticism for a speech defending families at Benedictine University.
Ms. Butker told the female graduates that women could have rewarding careers, but that supporting a family would be the most rewarding part of their lives. Ms. Butker’s detractors continue to baselessly accuse her of being a misogynist.
“I don’t think he was badmouthing women,” Reed said. Said He told reporters: “He has his opinion, and we all respect that. I put you all in this room, and there are a lot of your opinions that I don’t like.”
“I didn’t talk to him about it. I didn’t think I needed to,” Reid added. “We are a microcosm of life. We all come from different regions, different religions, different races. So we all get along and we respect each other’s opinions, even if we don’t necessarily follow them. We respect that everyone has a voice. That’s the great thing about America. I wish everyone could follow that.”
“Harrison Butker gave the speech in his personal capacity…”
Mr. Reed pointed out that the ability to work together and accomplish something despite differing opinions is what makes America great.
“I’ve known him for seven years. I judge him by the character he shows every day, and that’s a good person. That’s a guy who cares about the people around him and cares about his family,” Mahomes said. “We don’t always agree. He said things that I don’t necessarily agree with.”
In contrast, the NFL issued a statement distancing itself from Butker.
“Harrison Butker spoke as an individual,” NFL executive vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane said in a statement. release on Thursday. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in its commitment to inclusion, which makes our league even stronger.”
Butker’s speech sparks outrage on the left. The Daily Beast published The article went so far as to accuse Butker of anti-Semitism.
