Kansas City police said they were clearing people from the area of the facility as first responders treated the injured.
Officials said one of the injuries was not life-threatening, but five were in critical condition and three were in critical condition.
About 1 million people were expected to attend the parade, which was guarded by 600 law enforcement officers.
One woman participating in the parade said she was in an elevator when she heard the gunshots. She said people in the elevator closed the doors and prayed.
“I heard screaming and didn’t know if it was safe to leave, so I tried to block the door. I heard the elevator start, so I opened the door and jumped out. There was a police officer there. ,” she said. He told KMBC TV. “I have never been so happy to meet a police officer in my life.”
Another woman said she was inundated with fans.
“All of a sudden, people started rushing forward. Everyone started running. There was screaming,” Dana Brady said. “I didn’t know what was going on, but in this day and age, when people run, you run.”
Some Kansas City Chiefs players posted their feelings on social media.
“To facilitate treatment of the shooting victim, we urge people to exit the area as quickly and safely as possible and avoid the parking lot,” police said in a statement. “Many of you have footage of large numbers of police officers securing Union Station. They are working to ensure the safety of everyone inside Union Station and expedite treatment of the injured. .”
