Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes says ‘people think I’m slow,’ giving him an edge during scrambling plays

Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the most prolific passers in the NFL. Although his passing yards have decreased significantly this season, Mahomes is still known more for his throwing ability than his running ability.

However, when Mahomes uses his legs, he is usually effective in gaining the yards he needs in key moments of a game.

This season, Mahomes rushed for a career-high 389 yards while throwing for 4,183 yards in 16 games.

During a media session in Las Vegas ahead of the Super Bowl, Mahomes revealed the “secret” to his rushing success. The signal-caller noted that opponents tend to underestimate him because of the way he runs.

Mahomes suggested there is a perception that he is a slow runner because of the way he looks when he scrambles out of the pocket.

“I think I’m using proper form and getting faster compared to when I was in the NFL,” the two-time league MVP told reporters.

Mahomes admits his running style can seem unconventional and believes it gives him an advantage.

“But I think people think I’m slow because it’s not very pretty. I think it’s a little deceptive. Sometimes defenses think they’re going to catch me faster than they do, so they get bad angles. Maybe the secret to my speed is that I run differently than other people.”

Mahomes seems to have a knack for picking his spots when it comes to running.

Although he’ll never be in the class of elite two-way quarterbacks like Ravens star Lamar Jackson, Mahomes’ ability to use his feet occasionally helps keep defenses off balance.
