Near-Miss Incident In Hell’s Kitchen
In a shocking event on Monday afternoon, a child and a nun narrowly escaped injury when a tree unexpectedly fell in Hell’s Kitchen.
The incident occurred as they walked along the sidewalk near the Sisters of Life and Sacred Heart Convent, just as Winter Storm Hernando was tapering off. Reports indicate that the tree’s trunk broke under the heavy load of snow.
In a heroic act, the nun shielded the child by curling around him as branches scattered across the street. After the fall, she managed to pick up the boy and limped away, visibly shaken but determined.
Fortunately, neither of them suffered any injuries from the terrifying near-miss. Local residents expressed shock, noting that the fallen tree was one of the largest and oldest in the area, and it had been in disrepair for some time. One neighbor commented, “It’s pitiful.”
Later that same day, another tree collapsed onto an awning and shattered a window on Ninth Avenue, a mere block from the convent. Firefighters were able to clear a number of fallen trees from the roads, though part of the sidewalk remained blocked.
James Healy, who co-owns a nearby gay bar called FLEX, shared that he had attempted to reach out for tree removal assistance. However, he was informed that the city was overwhelmed with requests and that it could take several days to address the debris.
The Hernando winter storm marked a record in New York City, with snowfall reaching up to 24 inches; Islip on Long Island recorded an astounding 29.1 inches.
Meanwhile, as the snow cleared, many New Yorkers embraced a “traditional snow day,” even participating in friendly snowball fights, while some students urged Mayor Zoran Mamdani to reconsider plans to reopen schools, arguing the travel conditions were unsafe.
