Child suffering from hunger consumed diapers and drywall to stay alive before dying from neglect, according to police.

An Indiana toddler tragically died from severe neglect, and police revealed that he resorted to eating drywall and diapers in a desperate attempt to survive. The parents delayed contacting emergency services for over 14 hours.

The father, Trevor Reichard Hayes, 39, made the 911 call on March 31, stating that his son was unresponsive and had turned blue after his wife, Katherine Carter, 31, discovered the child. When authorities arrived, they found the 2-year-old boy, Eric Reichard, in an emaciated state and clearly suffering.

The couple claimed they last saw Eric alive around 11 p.m. the night before, highlighting the long wait before seeking help.

Officers immediately performed CPR on the child, who was lying on the living room floor, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

A detective noted in a probable cause affidavit that the child appeared extremely pale. The parents now face murder charges in connection with Eric’s death.

Police observed that the living conditions for the family were horrifying, with feces present in two children’s rooms and an overwhelming amount of drywall, paint chips, dirt, and diaper fragments scattered about. A training toilet, overflowing with waste, had not been cleaned for weeks, and the home was infested with bugs.

In stark contrast, the parents’ bedroom was tidy, featuring a neatly made bed and clean sheets, creating a disturbing difference from the filthy environment the children endured.

Investigators reported that Eric weighed only 15 pounds at the time of his death—approximately half the expected weight for a child his age. He had over 40 sores and insect bites on his body.

The mother indicated that her son consumed her own diaper, leading police to believe he resorted to this out of sheer hunger.

An autopsy confirmed that Eric had ingested drywall debris and remnants from diapers, finding evidence of “foreign gel-like material” and other debris in his colon. This grim discovery pointed to a heartbreaking struggle for survival.

Authorities determined that his cause of death was severe malnutrition and dehydration resulting from neglect.

The couple’s other two children were located in the home and have been removed by the Indiana Department of Children’s Services.

One of the children was reportedly hospitalized due to severe malnutrition and dehydration.

On April 3, Reichard Hayes and Carter were arrested, facing multiple murder charges and several counts of child neglect linked to the tragic death of their son.

Carter is set to return to court on May 14, while Hayes has a hearing scheduled for May 28.
