Trade tensions between the U.S. and China seem to be cooling down a bit, with both countries indicating they would reduce tariffs significantly.
Beijing:
China’s Foreign Ministry has responded to the punitive tariffs established by the U.S., asserting that Washington bears responsibility for the fentanyl crisis. During a regular press briefing, spokesperson Lin Jiang emphasized that the U.S. should address its own fentanyl problems without resorting to tariffs aimed at China, which he deemed unreasonable.
China has consistently maintained that the fentanyl issue is primarily a U.S. concern, and when asked if drug discussions would feature in future trade negotiations, Lin reiterated this perspective.
Despite the overall easing of trade tensions, which followed discussions in Switzerland over the weekend, Washington has yet to lift the 20% tariff on Chinese imports, claiming that Beijing has not done enough to curb the U.S. fentanyl epidemic.
