Taliban and China Denounce Israeli Strikes on Hamas
Recently, both the Taliban and China expressed their condemnation of Israel following a targeted attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar. This comes as relations between the Taliban and the Chinese Communist Party have grown closer since the fall of Afghanistan’s preceding government in 2021.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed an operation in Doha, aimed specifically at high-ranking members of Hamas. This group, which governs Gaza, has had many of its senior leaders residing comfortably in the Qatari capital for years. The tension escalated after Hamas launched an incursion into Israel, resulting in the tragic death of about 1,200 Israeli civilians, among other atrocities like mass abduction and torture.
The IDF described its strike in Doha as precise and focused on those who orchestrated the brutal attacks on October 7th. They stated, “Hamas leaders have been directly responsible for these horrific events.” Meanwhile, Qatar, which has acted as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, condemned the strikes, labeling them as acts of national terrorism. Qatar’s Prime Minister warned of potential repercussions and reaffirmed the country’s right to respond.
The Taliban quickly joined in, showing their solidarity with Hamas and expressing sorrow for the losses suffered by the group and its supporters. They vehemently denounced the attacks, underlining their long-standing ties with Qatar and stating that the strikes compromise Qatar’s sovereignty.
Interestingly, while these statements come from organizations often viewed through a starkly ideological lens, Beijing also criticized the Israeli actions. They characterized the airstrikes in Doha as a violation of Qatar’s territorial integrity and warned that such actions could escalate regional tensions. China has been more active lately in trying to mend relations in the Middle East, though it hasn’t markedly increased its influence in the area.
The Israeli government framed the attack as essential to its campaign against Hamas, with Prime Minister Netanyahu asserting that it was necessary to hold those accountable for the violence unleashed on October 7th. He noted that the targeted area served as a hub for Hamas leaders for strategic discussions and celebrations of their violent acts.
Adding his perspective, former President Trump voiced concerns over the strike, particularly its implications for U.S.-Qatari relations. While he emphasized the importance of eliminating Hamas, he suggested that the approach taken may not effectively advance American objectives in the region.
