China Displeased With Pakistan Regarding Ceasefire Approach? Analyzing the Timeline

New Delhi:

Following a series of escalations involving Pakistan and India during Operation Sindoor—an effort targeting terrorists in response to a Pakistan-linked attack in Pahargam—the focus shifted dramatically with the announcement of a ceasefire.

Four nations—India, Pakistan, the US, and China—issued statements around the ceasefire, but each had its unique narrative. Notably, India confirmed that communication occurred with Pakistan’s military leaders, whereas both the US and China emphasized calls for an immediate ceasefire directed at India.

“Trump’s Quick Announcement”

Donald Trump portrayed himself as a global peacemaker, asserting that a ceasefire was reached between India and Pakistan after significant US intervention. With fresh confidence, he tweeted that both nations exhibited “common sense and great intelligence.”

“China’s Discontent with Pakistan?”

While communications were buzzing in Washington, Islamabad, and New Delhi, China’s involvement seemed less active. It was reported that Beijing was unhappy with Islamabad for turning to the US instead, especially during a crisis. However, the timeline of events suggests that Islamabad had initially contacted Beijing before reaching out to Trump.

“China’s Strategic Comments”

Amid ongoing tensions, China’s Foreign Ministry noted a conversation between its foreign minister and India’s national security advisor, Ajit Doval. China’s statements highlighted a desire for de-escalation, urging both countries to engage in dialogue. Following these discussions, reports indicated that Pakistani drones ceased their incursions across borders, which some analysts interpreted as a response to China’s influence.

China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated hopes for a sustained ceasefire and a return to political dialogue between the two nations, characterizing the ceasefire as a result of coordination with both Islamabad and New Delhi.

“Pakistan’s Response to Trump’s Claim”

In the wake of Trump’s announcement, Pakistan issued its own statements, emphasizing its commitment to regional peace, albeit accompanied by military actions that contradicted its ceasefire declaration. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister remarked on the ongoing situation while talking to his Chinese counterpart, emphasizing the need for stability following recent military confrontations.

“Contradicting Trump’s Assertion”

Days later, Trump claimed he had used trade tactics to influence the ceasefire, stating that both nations had to consider trade relations. However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs countered this assertion, clarifying that communications regarding the ceasefire were underpinned by their direct engagements with Pakistan, rather than trade negotiations.
